Sports Recovery! Bounce Back Like Bolt.

Usain Bolt, despite suffering from scoliosis competes as a top athlete and ran at the 2016 Rio olympics after an injury earlier in the year because his homeopathic doctor helps him heal and maintain his body.

I had a question from Chris, a marathon runner, about natural alternatives for sports recovery.  He’s interested in natural nutrition & I’m guessing he is interested in bouncing back after races with good muscle, bone & joint repair.

I’m gonna smack him with some excellent homeopathic and tissue salt remedies to support muscle, bone and joint repair, later in this post. Meanwhile, there are some nutritional needs (beyond the obvious) that may be accentuated in runners and sports people.  You can meet these with careful eating:

essential for runners

Homeopathic remedies for Muscle, Bone & Joint Repair.

Bruising & Aching:
Arnica: can help to prevent those post-race muscle aches by limiting inflammation and disbursing bruising very quickly.
Take 1 arnica 30c pill straight after running, and another 12 hours later.  If you have run a marathon, do this every 12 hours for 3 days.  Standard, strenuous running, two doses will do.

Shin Splints/ Stress Fractures:
Symphytum 6c:  Speeds healing of fractures.  Take 3 times a day for a week and then take a break for 2 weeks.  If you are running a LOT, and tend to suffer with shin splints, you may need to repeat this remedy in cycles of 1 week on and 2 weeks off.

Check your shoes!  You need new running shoes after 300-500 miles of wear.  Make sure they suit your running gait too.  Good quality shoes are a must for bone and joint health.  Have them professionally fitted.

Supplements:
A Tissue Salt Combination for Runners

New Era Combination R Tissue Salts (for ‘Infant Teething’) contains a combination perfect for runners:

Calc fluor: component of bones, teeth, blood vessel walls, muscles & connective tissues. Helps strengthen weak, brittle bones & may help healing of heel spurs.  Restores tendon elasticity in hardened and strained tendons.
Calc phos: skeleton & connective tissues.  Helps with healing of fractures.
Ferrum phos: red blood cell production, anti-inflammatory properties.
Helps with healing of strains and sprains, restoring red blood cells where there is anaemia from blood loss or depletion.

Nourishing Traditions

My eldest daughter emigrated to Australia about 4 years ago and when she arrived at her Australian partner’s parents’ house she had to laugh and send me this photo of what she’d found in their kitchen. This book, Nourishing Traditions, sits on my bookshelf and always represented the hilarious contentions we had about food when she was a teenager and young adult.  🙂

The fact that she’d pulled it out and begun cooking with it was a laughing admission of defeat, filled with a gorgeous irony.

Ironically, when she went to university, one of her house mates opened her food cupboard and said to her

This was her favourite complaint about our food cupboards when she lived at home! So, you see, the transformation was already underway years earlier.

The beautiful, rosy (most likely organic) apple rarely falls far from the tree.  <3
