I’m actually considering calling this post “Killing Me Softly”.  It’s principally about steroid side effects, but I’m not drawing attention to just these drugs.

Your Immune System’s Warfare Tactics.

I visualize our immune system like a series of defensive concentric walls set up around a citadel:

The Citadel:
Our immune system will prioritize the protection of our mind and brain [‘the citadel’] above all else.  Throughout human history we’d die rapidly without our sanity to assist us in recognizing danger, keeping safe and finding the resources we need to survive.

The City Walls:
Next, our immune system prioritizes the protection of the singular organs.  We don’t have a spare heart or liver etc.

After this, we are down to the areas of the body or double organs that can be compromised to some extent and for some time without instant death. We can limp along with a part of these systems working, or one of these duplicated organs.

Penultimately, we are down to the joints & muscles.  Death will come slower [nowadays not really at all] with a joint or muscular problem.  It has to get pretty severe.

Finally, A skin problem like eczema or mucous membrane problem isn’t really going to impede your survival much at all [survival, not comfort is your body’s priority!]  You may succumb to infection but it is likely your immune system is pretty strong if you can keep your ill health at the skin level and protect the deeper organs and inner citadel.  You’ll burn a fever and fight an infection.

 

Your body is always using its UTMOST resources to push the imbalance out to the furthest point from the inner citadel.  As it is weakened, the defenses fall and the immune system is forced to allow more disorder to enter the higher organs and the mental and emotional spheres.

 


Steroid Side Effects:
Many Medicines Help You Lose the Fight.

Read the side effects of steroid meds [indeed any meds].  You’ll get some idea of the kinds of conditions you can lapse into.
Your predispositions dictate what you’ll get from that list of side effects.
That’s why a drug doesn’t always cause the same problem in everyone.

People have different predispositions to problems in different systems and organs when their symptoms are suppressed with steroids. Your family medical history can give you hints as to what to expect, and if you have a family predisposition to mental health problems we know that your walls tumble fast.

Side effects are signs you are losing the fight.  Sometimes they last and sometimes you are strong enough to detox and throw them off.

Let me tell you a story …

ECZEMA –> ASTHMA –> MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS

Maybe you got an eczema eruption at 2 months like the boy I talk about in this case [shortly after vaccinations is the most common time]. You use some steroid creams and some more vaccinations are scheduled and ear infections or tonsillitis start.   You continue your hydrocortisone cream, have a few courses of antibiotics and gradually your eczema improves.

Now you see that your colds start to involve some sinus or chest troubles.  Maybe bronchitis troubles you some [more antibiotics] and you’ve got some tenacious catarrh.  You get some ear tubes fitted.  You are also diagnosed with asthma [you’ve likely reached about age 5 by now, depends on how quickly your walls fall].  [Very common pattern in vaccinated children!]

Now you have increasingly unmanageable asthma [but your eczema is ‘cured’ or you have ‘grown out of it’].  It can get impossibly hard for people to manage this level of asthma without steroids [never withdraw them at this stage unless your doctor advises it] … so you get more steroids [inhaled and/or syrup].  You still get infections on your chest and need more antibiotics.
Gradually, with the steroids and antibiotics, your infections stop. You ‘grew out of them’.

If you successfully control asthma with these steroid meds you’ll likely begin to develop behaviour problems like aggression and/or anxiety.  Progressively, with continued steroid treatment, you may descend into ADD, ADHD, ASD and even levels of psychosis [psychosis is one of the side effects noted with steroid meds]. Gradually you’ve been gathering little hints of these mental health problems, and now you are truly at diagnosis point.  The likelihood is you are otherwise pretty ‘well’ nowadays. You no longer get repeat infections and you’ve not had a fever for some time, maybe years since you were 5 or 6.
School is getting pretty tough and you are gonna need your diagnosis to get the support you need.

When a homeopath listens to your history and hears these events in order, they can track the stages at which your immune system lost stages of the battle and the crucial events that breached your defenses.    This is my first job when I meet you, to track these events and stages and give you an assessment of your level of health and a prognosis for recovery.

When we treat these mental health problems with homeopathy asthma resurfaces. That’s proof that it was never ‘cured’ or ‘grown out of’.  It was just SUPERSEDED by a deeper illness.  Allopathic medicine generally works this way, by replacing one disease with a deeper disease.

I think we are looking at the health equivalent of ‘Peak Oil’ or global warming.

It’s unlikely homeopathy will be integrated, in part because none of us understand how it works [that doesn’t stop the medical folk!] and it is a big threat to Big Pharma’s shareholders.
Your personal option is to opt out of the conventional health system as far as you can.  Keep your family healthy and improve their health with homeopathic treatment.  Make it a priority.

Overcoming inertia [When you are afraid].

Fearlessness doesn’t come naturally to me.  I cracked living creatively despite it.
If I should let in pessimism & fear now; if I nurtured and entertained them, they may still have the ability to take over my life like unwanted, non-paying lodgers!  Like carrying their weight on my back.

Change seeps in around you 

Today I liked this post [from @sauravrungta], particularly this bit:

“To resist change is like resisting the current, which makes your life very hard. Sometimes, resistance can also put you in a situation where you are paddling against the current and trying to go upstream, which is just worse.”

It really got me thinking about how I have the child-like quality of being so un-switched on to change that it seeps in around me and before I know it, it’s happened.  I remembered I wasn’t always this way!
I know a lot of people who resist change.
They are anxious, frightened people who fear the worst & expect the worst.

It seems easier to stay in the known moment than to move into the unknown.

They resist.
But like @sauravrungta says, this takes a WHOLE lot of energy & leaves little room for growth and creativity.

I was rudely awakened to the concept of death by age 3 1/2 when my father died of a brain hemorrhage aged 31.
I was a TREMENDOUSLY fearful child.  I slept with my arms crossed over my chest, my teeth clenched, expecting to be stabbed from above or below and any number of perils my mind could muster.
Fear still had the capability of visiting with me well into my 40s [when my homeopath gave me a remedy 3 years ago that made me far more trusting! I was 50 this year.]

Crack how to live with it

I cracked how to live despite it before I resolved it.

As a teen, I recognized what a prison I was in and I freed myself.
I read Frank Herbert’s Dune!  The books contain a litany which I began to say to myself when I was afraid.  I taught myself to be brave by practicing turning toward the thing I fear [as long as I judge it not foolish to do so!].

“I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.”

If I was terrified someone/thing was behind me, I stopped in my tracks, literally turned round and stood still where previously I had run.  I ‘turned the inner eye to see its path’ and noticed I was calm.
I was encouraged onward by the calmness it brought and the freedom and strength I felt.

Default a YES!

I turned my default ‘NO!’ into a default ‘YES!’  Unless I had good, sound reason to avoid something, I refused to.
I work with a lot of anxious people [I’m a homeopath] and something I find useful to deal with inertia is building a habit of ‘changing your default’.   You have to build the habit and you have to maintain the habit with ‘habit hygiene’.  Don’t slip back for long to your old default.

Beware which wolf you feed
I remind myself:

If I should let in pessimism & fear now; if I nurtured and entertained them, they may still have the ability to take over my life like unwanted, non-paying lodgers!  Like carrying their weight on my back.

A doable action: It takes about 21 days …

It takes about 21 days to form a new habit and to break an old one [I tested it.  It’s sound :-)].

Replace your default ‘no’ with a default ‘yes’.  

Your decision is ‘yes’ and you have to give yourself good grounds to answer ‘no’.

I will face my fear.

[Hey!  I have a pathological inertia about doing anything I’m told to do … so I have to be sure it’s me making this decision and I’m fully committed to my new ‘yes’ habit.]

A default ‘Yes’ can change a lot more than fear & inertia.

It’s the same principle I used as a parent to become more responsive to my children’s needs & supportive of their liberty & equality:  I changed my default answer from ‘no’ to ‘yes’.  It’s a very positive way forward, and it became a wonderfully liberating habit. [Taking Children Seriously]

Take it easy – Baby Steps

It can be done in baby steps, getting stronger and braver daily.
The key thing is to OWN the problem.
No one else [and nothing] did it to you.
No one else is coming to change it for you.
To crack your ‘no’ habit, you have to want it.
It takes some bravery and commitment & some self-belief.

Piggy-Backing New Habits. 

The way to remember to practice a new habit for those 21 days is to add one new habit at a time and to piggy-back it onto something that is already a fixed habit you have.  Do it at the same time as the habitual thing.

HOMEOPATHIC STUDY INTO ANXIETY IN CHILDREN 2015  [Is now closed]

In 2015 I carried out a homeopathic study to work on protocols for treating children with anxiety disorders/issues that lead to difficulties consulting health care providers, attending school & accessing other opportunities. Youth is a time when being restricted by anxiety is particularly sad as it can have a very life and development limiting effect. 

The study was for children between ages 5 and 18.
Commonly, repeated antibiotics and/or steroids featured in the prior history of the patients along with predisposition in the family.  Where both these factors featured, the onset of anxiety tended to be at an earlier age. Anxiety was frequently compounded by other issues, such as ASD, ADHD, and depression.

The study outcomes demonstrate that it is workable and efficient to consult with anxious children through the parent initially.  As they begin to recover they are more able to consult with a homeopath directly.

The holistic nature of homeopathy meant that the symptoms of other disorders were frequently improved or cured.  Anxiety was usually one of the first symptoms to be resolved.  Many of the children had had repeat infections in the past, or chronic problems like asthma or eczema.  These were also treated with homeopathy with success.

School Phobia & Homesickness: Robert’s Case

Robert boards at a school in the UK. He came to me to talk about his miserable homesickness, which was causing school phobia. At the end of our consultation, I asked him about his voice. I knew he was a chorister but his voice was deep and strangled. Surely it wasn’t normally like that. Neither he nor his mum had noticed until then that his voice changed just before returning to school. Combining this marked change with the grief he felt about leaving his mum & about his grandfather’s death some years before, I gave him a single dose of Ignatia 10M there and then in my home office (and spares to take home).

Robert returned to school without feeling tearful and managed really well. He’s had 1 repeat of his remedy after a relapse but otherwise is fine, a year on from our consultation, and has been able to continue with the singing he loves.

Ignatia is a good remedy for ‘silent’ grief, when the person is unable to cry, though you may see more crying in Ignatia children than adults. You might also expect to hear the person sigh often, but I’d observed no sighing with Robert when I was interviewing him. The characteristic constriction in the throat gave it away.

GCSE exam stress is common and the ChildLine National Exam Stress Survey revealed that 96% of the 1300 who completed the survey felt anxious about GCSE exams and revision, with 59% feeling pressure to do well and 64% feeling they needed more support in dealing with exams.

The ChildLine website states:

  • Silica – anxiety from indecision and overwhelm. Heavy sweat (+ smelly feet).  Fear to undertake new tasks.  Sensitive to cold drafts. Constipation.
  • Argentum Nitricum – anticipatory anxiety from extreme performance pressure causing diarrhoea.  Desire for sweets (which cause diarrhoea) and salty food.  Impulsive and reckless.
  • Nux Vomica – anxiety related to issues of time, fear of being criticized for wasting time, feeling like they don’t have enough time.  Hard task master with family. Digestive disorders, burning indigestion.
  • Picric Acid – Exhaustion (mental) that is like a wall that comes down prior to exams

Homeopathic treatment is useful in resolving anxiety in children.   Anxiety in children has the potential to significantly limit life & development.  Childhood is the time to treat such anxiety so normal development & freedom can be gained as early as possible.

Parenting that prioritises connection, alongside homeopathic treatment for anxiety can enable children to be more resilient in situations that create disconnection and stress.  This can help with school refusal / school phobia, or enabling a child to take part in activities and opportunities they might not have been able to access.  The education system is not a perfect environment for some children, but gaining more resilience can enable them to fare as well as others.

Anxiety may be ‘obvious’ or may present with signs ranging from obsessive compulsive behaviours, sleep problems (insomnia, nightmares, etc), irritability, inattention, physical symptoms such as stomach aches, headaches, etc and erratic or excessive reactions.

Separation anxiety

is characterised by clinging to parents and reluctance to separate. This is normal in young children, but may cause a difficulty for older children who wish (*legal notes) or need to be in school.  It can be one of the reasons for school refusal / school phobia. The child may be able to talk about the reasons for feeling anxious, depending on age and language skills, and individual levels of awareness and trust.  Homeopathy may help with feelings of loss, a tendency to separation anxiety and with healing after difficult events.  It cannot remove a bully but it may enable the child to be more resilient and more able to talk about it.

Generalised anxiety

is characterised by excessive worry and anxiety across a variety of situations that does not seem to be the result of identified causes. Homeopathic treatment is intended to give children freedom from this condition and enable them to develop and explore in comfort.
