grief how to survive

Grief & How to Survive

If you are here reading this, you are in pain and I’m hoping I can help you in some way.

Profound grief can come from a loss in many forms.  It is inevitable with the loss of a parent, child, friend, spouse, sibling.  It can be a loss by death, abandonment or betrayal.

But it can also be the loss of faith in a religion you have held dear for a long time, that formed your full scope of coping mechanisms in life & provided your extended ‘family’ before the rug was pulled from beneath you.  It can be leaving home to board at school or going to university, or a child leaving.

The cause of a grief can be obvious and recognizable by everyone, but don’t discount something that seems too small to cause ‘true’ grief.  Often there is a lot wrapped up in a painful incident that you might not be consciously aware of.  It can speak to you from other griefs that you haven’t healed and call for them to be healed alongside. Trust your instinct. Acknowledging this can validate your feelings and cause you to be kinder to yourself.

A bereavement is likely to leave you gutted and helpless and might feel terribly unmanageable.   I’m here to offer some strategies that can make it livable and bring you through the healing you’ll need to do.  With this kind of support and these strategies, you can avoid hiding from your grief and avoid maintaining it as a wound that will not heal.  You can avoid having to hide from memories of the person that you lost in order to merely survive, losing the person more thoroughly in the process of hiding.

Homeopathy for grief

I have seen great help from a homeopathic remedy called Ignatia, especially when you cannot cry and need to be alone and the grief cannot lift.   You will feel a weight in your chest and likely a lump sensation in your throat.  You may have a bad temper too.  People frequently can’t behave well during grieving and if you are containing a lot of pain silently this can explode out as anger.  Forgive yourself and and know you are doing your best right now.

In the first stages of grief, it can feel like a panic attack.  Aconite as a homeopathic remedy can help here to still the panic.  You are not going to feel wonderful, nothing can do that, but it is possible to weather the storms.

Usually, I would recommend a single dose of 10M potency [aconite if needed and then ignatia].  It can be ordered from www.Helios.co.uk or www.sourcehomeopathy.com in the USA.  If you are not so sure, contact a homeopath or Helios/Source who will be happy to help you, or book a 15 min chat with me at www.calendly.com/sallylloydhomeopathy/15. I can give you simple potency advice or book you in for a more thorough support call.

After a grief, acute health problems like pleurisy and quinsy are not uncommon.  Act soon and get help.  These can be healed with homeopathy.  I had to heal both pleurisy and quinsy for myself soon after my brother’s death.  Family situations can be very difficult and traumatic and add to the grief, and health problems caused by the strain.

After the death of my brother, I found this piece of writing incredibly reassuring.  I don’t want to forget him or hide him away so I don’t feel the pain, even if I could.
I hope G Snow’s writing will help you to know you will survive and that it will get easier to remember your loved one without being broken all over again and I hope homeopathy can help soothe you too.
grief and how to survive

My brother Richard was lost overboard in 2013 at age 30.  We never found out what happened to him or why and the grief for my family has been long and difficult.  I really hope you will be able to come to terms with what has happened to you.  I hope this article goes a small way toward helping.

Best wishes

drug withdrawal symptoms

Natural Relief for Drug Withdrawal Symptoms.

This post is a response to a question about drug withdrawal symptoms sent during a live Q&A session in our support group “Treating Children’s Anxiety Naturally”.

How can homeopathy help people cope with withdrawal from psychotropic medications?

Drug withdrawal symptoms can often look just like the symptoms you started the drug for.  It’s worth researching the withdrawal symptoms carefully if you are coming off a med and then you know what you need to look for.  They are temporary but can be difficult to live through, meaning that people often return to the drugs they are trying to withdraw.

Our first action is to deal with the problem the drug was prescribed for, helping the person with that problem and then helping them withdraw psychotropic drugs with the cooperation of their conventional prescriber.

Safety first.  It’s a great idea to have supervision from the conventional prescriber, who has a set up to catch you if you fall.  We want to get you through the process safely.

Testimonial: Coming off Meds for Long-Term Depression

What I do as a homeopath:

1.  I consult with the patient to find the symptoms that occurred originally that necessitated the prescription of a psychotropic drug.  Most people have little trouble remembering them as they were usually strong and memorable and people usually forget to take meds at some point and have a relapse.  Also, sometimes some or all of the symptoms remained despite the psychotropic drug.
I need to distinguish and exclude the symptoms that are side effects of the med.
Then I give the needed homeopathic remedy to the patient and monitor the changes.  Usually, we see that the patient comes to gradually need a lower dose of the med and their conventional prescriber will recognise this and begin to lower the dose.   Sometimes this is not obvious and the patient might propose to their prescriber a lowering of the dose as a trial.

2.  When the dose is lowered enough that the patient decides they want to stop the psychotropic med [or decides with the collaboration of their prescriber that they will trial coming off] we review the withdrawal symptoms of the drug and keep a note of what to look out for.  At this point, we might repeat the remedy we used originally if needed to help with any withdrawal symptoms.  We might need a different remedy for the symptoms.

3. The next stage after the withdrawal symptoms settle and the patient feels stable is to homeopathically detox the remaining side-effects of the psychotropic medication.  This can be done with the medication itself in homeopathic form.  This can often bring good improvements not just with obvious side-effects but with overall feeling of being more ‘well’.    If there were medications that are thought to have contributed to the mental health problem in the first place [medications such as steroids can have side effects such as psychosis for example] these medications can also be detoxed and would usually be detoxed first and foremost.

4.  The 4th stage is to work with the patient to further raise their level of health.  Often, old symptoms or problems return.  They were not resolved but more overtaken by a deeper illness.  When we see old symptoms coming back we know that the patient is at an earlier, higher stage of health.  The intention is to work with these symptoms with remedies until we raise the level of health to a point high enough that they can weather traumas without relapsing.

I have also used this method to help people overcome withdrawal for recreational drugs.  One case was a baby born addicted due to exposure in utero.  Another was the side effects of cannabis use.

I hope this has been a useful explanation.
If you need help with drug withdrawal symptoms or a mental health problem my 15 min free call is the best way to discuss this with me.  www.calendly.com/sallylloydhomeopathy

steroid side effects

Your Immune System’s Warfare Tactics

I’m actually considering calling this post “Killing Me Softly”.  It’s principally about steroid side effects, but I’m not drawing attention to just these drugs.

[credit: bestgamewallpapers] [This post first published at steemit.]

Your Immune System’s Warfare Tactics.

I visualize our immune system like a series of defensive concentric walls set up around a citadel:

The Citadel:
Our immune system will prioritize the protection of our mind and brain [‘the citadel’] above all else.  Throughout human history we’d die rapidly without our sanity to assist us in recognizing danger, keeping safe and finding the resources we need to survive.

The City Walls:
Next, our immune system prioritizes the protection of the singular organs.  We don’t have a spare heart or liver etc.

After this, we are down to the areas of the body or double organs that can be compromised to some extent and for some time without instant death. We can limp along with a part of these systems working, or one of these duplicated organs.

Penultimately, we are down to the joints & muscles.  Death will come slower [nowadays not really at all] with a joint or muscular problem.  It has to get pretty severe.

Finally, A skin problem like eczema or mucous membrane problem isn’t really going to impede your survival much at all [survival, not comfort is your body’s priority!]  You may succumb to infection but it is likely your immune system is pretty strong if you can keep your ill health at the skin level and protect the deeper organs and inner citadel.  You’ll burn a fever and fight an infection.

Your body is always using its UTMOST resources to push the imbalance out to the furthest point from the inner citadel.  As it is weakened, the defenses fall and the immune system is forced to allow more disorder to enter the higher organs and the mental and emotional spheres.

Steroid Side Effects:
Many Medicines Help You Lose the Fight.

Read the side effects of steroid meds [indeed any meds].  You’ll get some idea of the kinds of conditions you can lapse into.
Your predispositions dictate what you’ll get from that list of side effects.
That’s why a drug doesn’t always cause the same problem in everyone.

People have different predispositions to problems in different systems and organs when their symptoms are suppressed with steroids. Your family medical history can give you hints as to what to expect, and if you have a family predisposition to mental health problems we know that your walls tumble fast.

Side effects are signs you are losing the fight.  Sometimes they last and sometimes you are strong enough to detox and throw them off.

Let me tell you a story …

ECZEMA –> ASTHMA –> MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS

Maybe you got an eczema eruption at 2 months like the boy I talk about in this case [shortly after vaccinations is the most common time]. You use some steroid creams and some more vaccinations are scheduled and ear infections or tonsillitis start.   You continue your hydrocortisone cream, have a few courses of antibiotics and gradually your eczema improves.

Now you see that your colds start to involve some sinus or chest troubles.  Maybe bronchitis troubles you some [more antibiotics] and you’ve got some tenacious catarrh.  You get some ear tubes fitted.  You are also diagnosed with asthma [you’ve likely reached about age 5 by now, depends on how quickly your walls fall].  [Very common pattern in vaccinated children!]

Now you have increasingly unmanageable asthma [but your eczema is ‘cured’ or you have ‘grown out of it’].  It can get impossibly hard for people to manage this level of asthma without steroids [never withdraw them at this stage unless your doctor advises it] … so you get more steroids [inhaled and/or syrup].  You still get infections on your chest and need more antibiotics.
Gradually, with the steroids and antibiotics, your infections stop. You ‘grew out of them’.

If you successfully control asthma with these steroid meds you’ll likely begin to develop behaviour problems like aggression and/or anxiety.  Progressively, with continued steroid treatment, you may descend into ADD, ADHD, ASD and even levels of psychosis [psychosis is one of the side effects noted with steroid meds]. Gradually you’ve been gathering little hints of these mental health problems, and now you are truly at diagnosis point.  The likelihood is you are otherwise pretty ‘well’ nowadays. You no longer get repeat infections and you’ve not had a fever for some time, maybe years since you were 5 or 6.
School is getting pretty tough and you are gonna need your diagnosis to get the support you need.

READING YOUR MEDICAL JOURNEY

When a homeopath listens to your history and hears these events in order, they can track the stages at which your immune system lost stages of the battle and the crucial events that breached your defenses.    This is my first job when I meet you, to track these events and stages and give you an assessment of your level of health and a prognosis for recovery.

When we treat these mental health problems with homeopathy asthma resurfaces. That’s proof that it was never ‘cured’ or ‘grown out of’.  It was just SUPERSEDED by a deeper illness.  Allopathic medicine generally works this way, by replacing one disease with a deeper disease.

The modern child’s development and life outcomes are frequently severely compromised by these medical interventions.

Homeopathy can offer a fairly rapid cure for eczema in the first place.
Curing the results of suppression is a long-term undertaking.

Homeopathy needs to be integrated into general medical practice if we are not going to see the battle lost in most people’s lives.  Each generation is being born with more predispositions and weaker immunity.
I think we are looking at the health equivalent of ‘Peak Oil’ or global warming.

It’s unlikely homeopathy will be integrated, in part because none of us understand how it works [that doesn’t stop the medical folk!] and it is a big threat to Big Pharma’s shareholders.
Your personal option is to opt out of the conventional health system as far as you can.  Keep your family healthy and improve their health with homeopathic treatment.  Make it a priority.

anxiety children

Overcoming inertia [When you are afraid].

Fearlessness doesn’t come naturally to me.  I cracked living creatively despite it.
If I should let in pessimism & fear now; if I nurtured and entertained them, they may still have the ability to take over my life like unwanted, non-paying lodgers!  Like carrying their weight on my back.

Change seeps in around you

Today I liked this post [from @sauravrungta], particularly this bit:

“To resist change is like resisting the current, which makes your life very hard. Sometimes, resistance can also put you in a situation where you are paddling against the current and trying to go upstream, which is just worse.”

It really got me thinking about how I have the child-like quality of being so un-switched on to change that it seeps in around me and before I know it, it’s happened.  I remembered I wasn’t always this way!
I know a lot of people who resist change.
They are anxious, frightened people who fear the worst & expect the worst.

It seems easier to stay in the known moment than to move into the unknown.

They resist.
But like @sauravrungta says, this takes a WHOLE lot of energy & leaves little room for growth and creativity.

I was rudely awakened to the concept of death by age 3 1/2 when my father died of a brain hemorrhage aged 31.
I was a TREMENDOUSLY fearful child.  I slept with my arms crossed over my chest, my teeth clenched, expecting to be stabbed from above or below and any number of perils my mind could muster.
Fear still had the capability of visiting with me well into my 40s [when my homeopath gave me a remedy 3 years ago that made me far more trusting! I was 50 this year.]

Crack how to live with it

I cracked how to live despite it before I resolved it.

As a teen, I recognized what a prison I was in and I freed myself.
I read Frank Herbert’s Dune!  The books contain a litany which I began to say to myself when I was afraid.  I taught myself to be brave by practicing turning toward the thing I fear [as long as I judge it not foolish to do so!].

“I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.”

If I was terrified someone/thing was behind me, I stopped in my tracks, literally turned round and stood still where previously I had run.  I ‘turned the inner eye to see its path’ and noticed I was calm.
I was encouraged onward by the calmness it brought and the freedom and strength I felt.

Default a YES!

I turned my default ‘NO!’ into a default ‘YES!’  Unless I had good, sound reason to avoid something, I refused to.
I work with a lot of anxious people [I’m a homeopath] and something I find useful to deal with inertia is building a habit of ‘changing your default’.   You have to build the habit and you have to maintain the habit with ‘habit hygiene’.  Don’t slip back for long to your old default.

Beware which wolf you feed
I remind myself:

If I should let in pessimism & fear now; if I nurtured and entertained them, they may still have the ability to take over my life like unwanted, non-paying lodgers!  Like carrying their weight on my back.

A doable action: It takes about 21 days …

It takes about 21 days to form a new habit and to break an old one [I tested it.  It’s sound :-)].

Replace your default ‘no’ with a default ‘yes’.

Your decision is ‘yes’ and you have to give yourself good grounds to answer ‘no’.

I will face my fear.

[Hey!  I have a pathological inertia about doing anything I’m told to do … so I have to be sure it’s me making this decision and I’m fully committed to my new ‘yes’ habit.]

A default ‘Yes’ can change a lot more than fear & inertia.

It’s the same principle I used as a parent to become more responsive to my children’s needs & supportive of their liberty & equality:  I changed my default answer from ‘no’ to ‘yes’.  It’s a very positive way forward, and it became a wonderfully liberating habit. [Taking Children Seriously]

Take it easy – Baby Steps

It can be done in baby steps, getting stronger and braver daily.
The key thing is to OWN the problem.
No one else [and nothing] did it to you.
No one else is coming to change it for you.
To crack your ‘no’ habit, you have to want it.
It takes some bravery and commitment & some self-belief.

Piggy-Backing New Habits.

The way to remember to practice a new habit for those 21 days is to add one new habit at a time and to piggy-back it onto something that is already a fixed habit you have.  Do it at the same time as the habitual thing.

3 Rapid, Simple Anxiety Cures.

3 rapid simple anxiety cures

Sarah is age 6 and suffered from germ phobia and severe school anxiety.  Twice this year she was affected by breakdowns during which she said, “I don’t know how I’m still alive when I feel like this.”  Sarah was unable to attend school, had extreme anxiety & insomnia, with very dark days.  When I initially took her case I was reminded strongly of two recent cases of 6-year-old girls with very similar symptoms [here] & [here].  The remedy they both had was Arsenicum and both had made miraculous, rapid recoveries after their first remedy.  When I followed up with Sarah yesterday, the same had happened.  3 rapid, simple anxiety cures.
She’s happy in school and engaging in imaginative play for the first time.  And she is feeling safe at bedtime.

Even cases of severe anxiety in children can respond rapidly to homeopathic treatment.  Each of these 3 cases required a first consultation and one follow-up.

You have little to lose to try homeopathy for anxiety.  The child doesn’t even have to speak to the homeopath, usually a conversation with a parent is plenty fine <3

3 rapid simple anxiety cures

Weeping, Endometriosis & Bleeding Between Periods – 3 cases.

Case 1: Caroline – PCOS, Endometriosis & Sadness.

Caroline suffered with PCOS & painful endometriosis, with a long history of uterine complaints. She reported that it was now affecting her mental health … that she was very tearful & exhausted & worse at certain times in her cycle. She was also suffering from sleeplessness & memory problems.
After Pulsatilla, she felt immediately more energetic, positive and calm. This has remained. Her endo & PCOS symptoms have improved and she has since had Sepia to follow the Pulsatilla.
This case is still in progress.
Pulsatilla and sepia are key remedies in hormone imbalance and uterine conditions.

Case 2: Geraldine – Weeping & Continuous Menstrual Bleeding

Geraldine was finding herself weeping often. She was very sad that her son was away at school and she felt unsupported in life. She had continuous menstrual bleeding that was leaving her anaemic and exhausted. 1 dose of Pulsatilla 200c improved her mood remarkably. She was far more able to cope, and the bleeding between periods stopped. She then began a course of spatone to treat her anaemia, along with a tissue salt called Ferrum phos.   Geraldine’s was a classic Pulsatilla case.

Case 3: Kath – Anxiety & Tearfulness.

Kath is the mother of one of my child patients. Her child had a great recovery from anxiety with homeopathy. Kate contacted me in urgency in her own regard, late at night. During interviewing her about her child, I’d already spotted that she would probably need pulsatilla and I was able to recommend she take a dose for the acute state she was suffering with. She had a pleasingly striking response to the remedy.

If you are suffering from hormonal or uterine problems, anxiety or depression, get in touch with me.   I work internationally via video call and face-to-face in Staffordshire, UK.

homesickness school phobia

School Phobia & Homesickness: Robert’s Case

Robert boards at a school in the UK. He came to me to talk about his miserable homesickness, which was causing school phobia. At the end of our consultation, I asked him about his voice. I knew he was a chorister but his voice was deep and strangled. Surely it wasn’t normally like that. Neither he nor his mum had noticed until then that his voice changed just before returning to school. Combining this marked change with the grief he felt about leaving his mum & about his grandfather’s death some years before, I gave him a single dose of Ignatia 10M there and then in my home office (and spares to take home).

Robert returned to school without feeling tearful and managed really well. He’s had 1 repeat of his remedy after a relapse but otherwise is fine, a year on from our consultation, and has been able to continue with the singing he loves.

Ignatia is a good remedy for ‘silent’ grief, when the person is unable to cry, though you may see more crying in Ignatia children than adults. You might also expect to hear the person sigh often, but I’d observed no sighing with Robert when I was interviewing him. The characteristic constriction in the throat gave it away.

If you have a child with school phobia due to separation anxiety, or you suffer from grief or homesickness, speak to me about how I can help you.

“I’d wake unable to breathe, gasping, holding my throat”

Tessa suffered overwhelming anxiety since as a child

I’d be lying in bed as a little girl, replaying something that didn’t work out, knees trembling.

Since all the stuff over the years, I love to be by myself when it is quiet. This is a change. I think I liked to help others and be around them, to laugh and be silly. I was lonely by myself, but since kids, life changed drastically.

My panic attacks began when I was in the hospital. I had them occasionally before that & I’d been hiding them from my husband. I was asleep when the panic attack came.  I’d wake unable to breathe, gasping, holding my throat, trying to relax to try to breathe, with palpitations and sweating buckets.

When she came to be part of the Adrenal Fatigue & Hypothyroidism study, she was burned out and struggling with exhaustion, anxiety & arthritic pain.
Tessa reported at our first meeting:

I forced myself to walk yesterday and I have fluid coming above both knee caps after.  My finger is very swollen and purple. This right hand had problems many times. My tendons atrophy fast. They can’t bend anymore. I can’t bend it because I haven’t bent it for so long. Over the years I’ve had these swollen joints in the same arm, wrist, then thumb, middle, then ring finger, then the first finger. I’ve also had shoulder problems. I couldn’t raise my right arm for 6 months.

Tessa had her first remedy early August 2016.  21st September she wrote to me:

I’ve always tried to hide my tears from my kids that follow being overwhelmed. Well I read something a minute ago that made me laugh so hard I had tears rolling down my face…lol.. scared my daughter, she was concerned I was crying. Nope! Not today 🙂

Sometimes when I’m treating a deep, emotional problem, a physical problem will return or get worse.  This is a good sign of healing.  This did happen to Tessa.  Her joint pains got worse for a while, but now she has the benefit of the improved anxiety and her joints are freeing up and the pain is far better.  I know for sure she was fitting a shelf in her children’s upper bunk bed on Thursday, having climbed the ladder!
Her message today reads …

arthritis homeopathy treatment

The remedy that suited Tessa so well was phosphorus.  It’s a great remedy for a sympathetic and social person who becomes burned out and exhausted.  She’s a lovely person to work with & she has referred so many people to me since she began to see the results!  She wants all her loved ones to benefit, and they are too.

If you suffer anxiety, adrenal fatigue or arthritis I’ll be happy to talk to you about how I can help you too.

Child mental health

Follow Your Child

Following your child is a fast route to good mental health:

Enabling children to gain a sense of their own competence is the key to maintaining good self-esteem and mental health. Sometimes we can step back and let them work things out for themselves, with us feigning nonchalance in the background until we DO grow to trust them.
Most often we are vacillating between overprotecting or pushing them into things we think they *should* be ready for.

Neither push nor pull … enable.

We need to enable them to be powerful & competent in themselves, in their own time and at their own speed, by facilitating and stepping back with the body language that speaks thus:

You are competent Click To Tweet.

Follow the child. Facilitate. They know where they are headed & how to become a fully functioning human being.

If you have followed and facilitated and your child is trapped in a state of anxiety, it is time to get the kind of help that can make big differences, fast … without harmful side effects.  Take a look at some of my testimonials and see what homeopathy can do.

Panic Attacks & Family Trauma

Panic Attacks Run In Families?

Panic attacks (frequently leading to anxiety & depression) run in families. Some well known explanations for this are: thinking patterns (nurture), common experiences (environment) & inherited factors (nature).  However, some reasons you’d not have guessed!

panic attacks homeopathy

Science is now finding that family trauma can be silently passed down to children.

Your panic attacks could be an echo of family trauma you may never have known about! Click To Tweet

Homeopaths treat panic very successfully

Homeopaths treat panic attacks very successfully.  Patients see panic attacks disappear rapidly & are often given a remedy they can take to immediately stop attacks if they ever return.
Also, homeopaths see unexplained anxieties, phobias and panic that turn out to be associated with traumas experienced by distant family members, just as described in the article below.

Finally, science and psychiatry are catching on, as the article below beautifully describes.

Epigenetics can give you an explanation if you can’t find the cause of your panic attacks in an event in your own lifetime.
Therefore, you can put your mind a little at rest.  You are not ‘going mad’.
There is a mechanism, recognised by science, that accounts for your experiences.
